MAZDA MIATA BREAKS WORLD RECORD FOR LONGEST CARAVAN; LONGEST PARADE OF A SINGLE MODEL LEAVES INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY
INDIANAPOLIS, June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- An entry in the "Guinness Book of Records" was shattered today when a parade of more than 250 Mazda Miatas pulled out of Indianapolis Motor Speedway and headed across town with a police escort. The line of MX-5 Miata sports cars easily broke the previous record of 147 Rolls Royce automobiles that gathered in Victoria, Australia, Sept. 19, 1992. The huge gathering of Miata enthusiasts was organized by Indy Miata, the Indiana chapter of the Miata Club of America, as part of a series of events to celebrate the sports car's fifth anniversary. The Mazda Miata is both the strongest selling sports car and strongest selling convertible in the world. More than 300,000 Miatas have been sold worldwide since it was introduced in 1989 as a 1990 model. About half of them -- 150,992 -- were sold in the United States where sales are up dramatically over the last year. "When people think of Mazda, many of them think of the Miata," said Kazuo "Sonny" Sonoguchi, president of Mazda Motor of America, Irvine, Calif. "The Miata created a big sensation when Mazda introduced it because it represented the re-birth of the traditional open sports car. We're very proud of it." The week-long celebration of the Miata's fifth anniversary began with club members turning laps at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and will culminate with a June 19 barbecue at the car's birthplace at Mazda Research & Development of North America in Irvine. The Miata Club of America, boasting 30,000 members, was formed almost as soon as the car hit the streets. "After five years, Miata Mania is stronger than ever," said Tom Matano, executive vice president, product design & development, Mazda Research & Development of North America, Irvine. Matano directed the U.S. design team that sketched the original design of the Miata and built the first clay models. "The Miata was designed to appeal to people's emotions, and this is readily apparent at Miata Club events." Miata Club and Magazine Promotions Director Barb Beach says the passion comes from the devoted owners worldwide.
Chip Helmick, president of Indy Miata, one of 80 Miata club chapters, said the love of the Miata has created a common bond that has brought people together from a myriad of backgrounds. "I've had so much fun with the people who own these cars," he said. "I've met tons of people through the club and they're the greatest." Helmick said one member, going through a mid-life crisis, told his wife, "I'm having an affair or buying a Miata." Her reply: "What color should we get?" The Indy Miata event drew moral support from the Indianapolis City- County Council, which issued a resolution signed by Mayor Stephen Goldsmith wishing the Miata Club of America well on its world record attempt. The Miatas were escorted by the deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's motorcycle drill team. 6/12/94
